THE MUMMY: Having lensed DRACULA (and METROPOLIS before it, among others), Karl Freund made his directorial debut with THE MUMMY, the tale of British archaeologists who uncover the ancient sarcophagus of a mummified Egyptian priest (Boris Karloff). Foolishly ignoring its warning not to open the box, the mummy takes the form of a modern Egyptian and quickly begins his quest to resurrect the soul of his love, which he believes has been reincarnated in a modern woman (Zita Johann).
THE INVISIBLE MAN: Claude Rains, in his first American screen appearances, stars as scientist Jack Griffin who, after a drug experiment gone awry, becomes invisible and must hide out in the local inn, his face completely bandaged. By the time Griffin confides in friends, the drug has turned him into a homicidal maniac who must be hunted down. The success of the film would spawn a number of sequels and spin-offs, solidifying its reputation as one of the great horror films of the 1930s.
