Gloria (Anne Hathaway) is an out-of-work party girl who, after getting kicked out of her apartment by her boyfriend, is forced to leave her life in New York and move back to her hometown where she rekindles a friendship with childhood chum/bar owner Oscar (Jason Sudeikis). When news reports surface that a giant creature is destroying Seoul, South Korea, Gloria gradually comes to the realization that she is somehow connected to this far-off phenomenon. As events begin to spin out of control, Gloria must determine why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world.

In his debut feature, TIMECRIMES, Nacho Vigalondo flipped tropes on their head and blurred the lines between sci-fi, fantasy, and drama. Here, he does it again. What starts out seeming like a gentle and quirky drama turns out to be far more epic in scope, but without ever sacrificing its heart. COLOSSAL is an impressive and accomplished film that shows Vigalondo is already one of genre film’s most creative and inspiring talents.

“COLOSSAL is a love letter to kaiju movies, and it’s also the story of a woman battling her way out of the abusive pattern she’s fallen into—a personal drama played out on a giant scale, literally…[It] feels as resonant in its imaginative combination of city-wrecking monsters and self-destructive behavior as it does unpredictable.” —Allison Wilmore, Buzzfeed

“Determinedly bizarre, psychologically inquisitive and in the end rather wonderful...Think TRAINWRECK meets PACIFIC RIM, with a dash of FORBIDDEN PLANET.” —Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out New York
