Part of Midnight Movies. When Italian Shockumentary filmmaker Romano Vanderbes came to our country at the dawn of the 1980’s, he had one question “What is America?” His answer? THIS IS AMERICA, a two-part film series that explores the deepest, darkest, weirdest corners of the nation in the style of that era’s popular Mondo film. The second installment offers us a glimpse at Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra’s run for mayor of San Francisco, nuns who train in karate for self-defense, a look at America’s gun fetish, and even made-up stuff like a piranha epidemic! This film has a little something for everyone, and despite its exploitative tone, it still manages to both celebrate and stand in awe of the wonderfully eccentric soul of America the Beautiful.
