MAUDIE, based on a true story, is an unlikely romance in which the reclusive Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke) hires a fragile yet determined woman named Maudie (Sally Hawkins) to be his housekeeper. Maud, bright-eyed but hunched with crippled hands, yearns to be independent and live away from her protective family—and passionately, to create art. Unexpectedly, Everett finds himself falling in love. MAUDIE charts Everett’s efforts to protect himself from being hurt, Maud’s deep and abiding love for this difficult man, and her surprising rise to fame as a folk painter.
“This is a painter whose canvas was her life, and whose life her canvas. MAUDIE is a magnificent celebration of both.” —Chris Knight, National Post
“Hawke’s precise performance manages to make the plight of an illiterate, insecure and occasionally abusive man deeply sympathetic, inducing pity rather than anger. Between the two of them, Hawke and Hawkins turn the film into a cheering story of two outcasts who stumble toward their own kind of love, gradually learning to comfort and care for each other.” —Kate Taylor, The Globe and Mail
