Tormented wife Irina (Anita Strindberg) endures limitless physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her barbaric husband Oliviero (Luigi Pistilli), an author with writer’s block and an Oedipal obsession with his mother—until one day young women begin turning up dead at the couple’s idyllic country estate. When Oliviero’s niece Floriana (Edwige Fenech) comes to visit, the couple’s already bestial relationship is further unhinged as the young girl with mysterious intentions sets about seducing the two desperate lovers. Director Sergio Martino’s no-holds-barred study of a relationship fueled by hate and distrust features more twists and turns than your average stalk-and-slash fare. But it’s the performances by some of the genre’s most notable players, along with a phenomenal soundtrack by composer Bruno Nicolai, that truly give the film its razor-sharp edge.
