In Memoriam: Neil Simon (1927-2018): When fussy Felix (Jack Lemmon) becomes suicidal over his impending divorce, he accepts an offer to move in with his best friend, messy Oscar (Walter Matthau). Felix drives Oscar crazy with his obsession over his soon-to-be ex. Oscar tries to get him out of his funk by arranging a double date with two wacky British neighbors, Cecily (Monica Evans) and Gwendolyn (Carole Shelley). When the plan backfires and Felix grows even more despondent, his friendship with Oscar is put to the test. Story and screenplay by author/playwright Neil Simon, who passed away this past August at the age of 91.

“When critics discuss chemistry, that onscreen magic that occurs between perfectly paired actors, the electricity exemplified by Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon is a textbook illustration of same.”—Bill Gibron, Filmcritic

“For all its over familiarity, this is a good play, easily Simon's best, and Matthau and Lemmon inhabit it with grace and style.” —Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader

“...Revisiting Saks’ screen version nearly 50 years later is like a class in how comedy and storytelling evolve, and how some aspects of a story endure over time, while others get sloughed away.” —Tasha Robinson, The Dissolve
