Based loosely on the story of the director's own parents, COLD WAR covers the entirety of a couple's love affair, from their enchanted first meeting in 1949 to the aching denouement of their relationship in the 1960s. Wiktor (Tomasz Kot) is a jazz-loving pianist and musical director tasked with auditioning traditional folk musicians as part of a state-sponsored project to champion culture from rural Poland. Young Zula (Joanna Kulig), who turns out to be more torch singer than folk singer, captivates Wiktor at first sight with her beauty and insouciance. Their fates joined, Zula and Wiktor are soon struggling both with personal demons and historical forces that persist in tearing them apart.

“Another powerhouse turn by a female actor, Joanna Kulig, is the mesmerizing centerpiece of COLD WAR...a fine companion piece to [Pawel Pawlikowski’s] Oscar-winning 2014 film, IDA. The two pictures have much in common: crystalline black-and-white camerawork, a boxy aspect ratio, bursts of jazz music and an exacting sense of narrative concision.” —Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times

“Searing, elegant and swift… The musical ensemble performances, masterfully choreographed by Pawlikowski, explode with excitement, the singers mesmeric and unnaturally rapt, perhaps sensing their lives are at stake. The big news here is the performance of Kulig as gorgeous, doomed Zula. For sheer magnetism it ranks with that of Jeanne Moreau in JULES AND JIM and should make her an international star.” —Erica Abeel, Film Journal International
