Manchester, 1976. Tony Wilson (Steve Coogan) is an ambitious but frustrated local Granada TV news reporter, angling for a way to make his mark. After witnessing a life-changing concert by the Sex Pistols, he persuades Granada to televise one of their performances, eventually parlaying his power as a perceptive tastemaker into a musical revolution. Wilson and his friends found Manchester’s influential Factory Records label, producing New Wave legends Joy Division and New Order, and construct their own music venue—The Haçienda—setting the stage for the hedonistic entrance of the Happy Mondays and their infamous “Madchester” brand of rave and acid house mania.

“An irreverent musical-comedy extravaganza that follows the course of British pop from New Wave to rave, like some demented version of Monty Python meets Top of the Pops.” —Jaime Russell, BBC

“The movie works so well because it evokes genuine, not manufactured, nostalgia. It records a time when the inmates ran the asylum, when music lovers got away with murder. It loves its characters.” —Roger Ebert, rogerebert.com
