On the outskirts of Birmingham, England and the margins of society, the Billingham family perform extreme rituals and break social taboos as they muddle through a life decided by factors beyond their control. At times shocking and laced with an unsettling humor, three episodes unfold as a powerful evocation of life—as experienced growing up in a Black Country council flat.

In 1997, director Richard Billingham was the first recipient of the Deutsche Borse Photography Prize. He exhibited at the Venice Biennale 2001 and was nominated for the Turner Prize the same year. His work is in many collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, and London’s V&A and Tate Gallery. RAY & LIZ is his first feature-length film.

“Celebrated photographer Richard Billingham reformats a host of his formal and thematic obsessions in his first feature, a rare and remarkable cine-memoir.” —Guy Lodge, Variety

“Turner Prize-nominated British artist Richard Billingham makes an adept transition from still photography to cinema…an intensely observed narrative feature that draws deeply from Billingham’s previous work.” —Leslie Felperin, Hollywood Reporter
