Programmer’s Note: Unlike much of the rest of the country, the Belcourt will be screening AQUARELA in its native framerate of 96 frames-per-second. It is simply not possible to experience this film in the same way at home, or in cinemas within hundreds of miles from here.

AQUARELA takes audiences on a deeply cinematic journey through the transformative beauty and raw power of water. Filmed at a rare 96 frames-per-second (versus the old standard 24) and projected here in its native format, the film is a visceral wake-up call that humans are no match for the sheer force and capricious will of Earth's most precious element. From the precarious frozen waters of Russia's Lake Baikal to Miami in the throes of Hurricane Irma to Venezuela's mighty Angels Falls, water is AQUARELA's main character, with director Victor Kossakovsky capturing her many personalities in startling visual detail.

“AQUARELA is truly a theatrical experience that benefits from the dark, distraction-free nature of the theater, in which the cycles of water, from frozen lakes to hurricanes, becomes an all-consuming force.” —Christian Gallichio, The Playlist

“A 90-minute documentary on water? Really? How exciting can that be? You have no idea.” —Kenneth Turan, LA Times
