TOM PETTY: SOMEWHERE YOU FEEL FREE offers a unique take on the Petty legacy, diving deep into a condensed period of creativity and freedom for the legendary rock star. Capturing the period of 1993-1995, during which he created his seminal and most emotionally raw album Wildflowers, this unvarnished look at Petty features never-before-seen footage drawn from a newly discovered archive of 16mm film — as well as new interviews with album co-producers Rick Rubin and Heartbreaker Mike Campbell, along with original Heartbreaker Benmont Tench.

Winner of the Audience Award at this year’s SXSW Festival, director Mary Wharton illuminates an artist at the height of his powers, providing an intimate and emotional look at an enigmatic icon with archival footage of Petty and his band in the recording studio, behind-the-scenes on tour, and at home with his family, providing a view of Tom Petty as he has never been seen before.

“There's nothing better than a life well lived and documented for us all to celebrate. Mary Wharton lovingly brings Tom Petty's journey full circle and has picked up a new fan in the process.” —Carla Renata, The Curvy Film Critic

“A deep dive into a single moment, and it works because it’s true to the unpretentious but driven spirit of its subject…. A film that seems to be a specific, limited thing — a look at one album — has grown, quietly, into more than that; it becomes a character study of Petty himself that feels both affectionate and true, and a look at the intersection of the creative process and real life.” —Steve Pond, The Wrap
