Seventeen-year-old Megan is the embodied fantasy of the American Dream. She is a happy, healthy, suburban girl who loves cheerleading and dates a handsome football player. Megan’s affinity for the music of Melissa Etheridge, vegetarianism, and disinterest in her boyfriend’s terrible kissing style raises concern about her sexuality. Her parents and boyfriend stage an intervention — sending Megan to True Directions, a conversion therapy camp. There she meets other kids like her, forced to disavow their homosexuality. This film is a playful romp between calling in and calling out, from the center and margins of queer subjectivity. Putting satire and camp to good use, it explores the truths and contradictions of normativity and stereotyping — each part of, and imposed onto, queer identity, culture, and practice — for better and worse.
