Furthering the revision of Western myths begun five years prior with MCCABE & MRS. MILLER, Altman set his eyes on the gap between history and the media-minded legend of “Cowboys and Indians” as the buffoonish Buffalo Bill (Paul Newman) must contend with the casting of the actual Chief Sitting Bull for his battle-centric Wild West Show. Co-starring Burt Lancaster and Harvey Keitel among a host of Altman regulars, notably including Geraldine Chaplin as star attraction Annie Oakley. Given the nationalist mood as the U.S. was celebrating its bicentennial, BUFFALO BILL was poorly received but has since been re-evaluated more favorably.
