Part of A Tribute to Paul Reubens

Paul Reubens got a big break playing coked-out Pee-wee-esque mental patient “Howie Hamburger Dude” in this third installment of the popular stoner duo’s film franchise. Superlative dopeheads Cheech (Cheech Marin) and Chong (Tommy Chong) realize that one of their pals is developing a strain of pot that slowly morphs smokers into reptiles. They begin hawking the one-of-a-kind grass while disguised as ice-cream sellers — but the police, led by Sgt. Stedanko (Stacy Keach), are rather suspicious of the operation. When Stedanko manages to sneak some “ice cream” from the boys and promptly sprouts a forked tongue, Cheech and Chong must go on the lam. Featuring a cameo from psychonaut supreme Dr. Timothy Leary.

Programmer’s Note: For the Tue, Sep 19 screening, CHEECH AND CHONG’S NICE DREAMS plays back-to-back showtimes with LIFE DURING WARTIME. Both will screen in 35mm and represent both the earliest and most recent of Paul Reubens’ films in this series, and their respective tones couldn’t be further apart on the spectrum of comedy. The man had range.
