Part of Music City Mondays: Morricone x3

Mon, Mar 18 at 8:00pm: Introduction from Third Man Records' co-founder and co-owner Ben Swank, who oversaw production of the HATEFUL EIGHT soundtrack's vinyl release | BUY TICKETS

Bounty hunter John “The Hangman” Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his dangerous prisoner Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh) encounter a treacherous blizzard en route to her sentencing in Wyoming. During their stagecoach ride they come across another bounty hunter, Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), and former Confederate rebel leader Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins). Seeking refuge from the weather, the group chart a course for a mountain cabin to wait out the storm. There, they meet four other traveling strangers (Tim Roth, Demián Bichir, Michael Madsen and Bruce Dern) with whom they must share the stuffy confines until the end of the blizzard. Tensions eventually boil over as each individual has his or her own agenda in this inventive Western set in the aftermath of the American Civil War. Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and featuring another iconic Ennio Morricone score, for which he (finally) won an Oscar.

“A high-wire thriller, full of masterfully executed twists, captivating dialogue, and a wildly entertaining narrative that gallops along at a pace to make three hours evaporate in an instant. Best film of the year? Yes. Shot in 70 mm with an orchestral score by Ennio Morricone, a full overture, and an intermission, the structure resembles some of the greatest studio productions of the mid-20th century.” —James Berardinelli, Reel View (Dec 22, 2015)

“[Tarantino] relies on Ennio Morricone to set the tone, and gets a stiff, synthesizer-driven horse kick of anticipation from it. While Tarantino excels at slow-build suspense (and word is out that a bloodbath awaits), Morricone’s eight-minute mood-setter indicates the violence is coiled and ready to strike.” —Peter Debruge, Variety (Dec 15, 2015)

“Not a movie about America's past but about its present, and the final picture it paints is very dark indeed. That Tarantino takes you on a wild and hugely entertaining ride before he makes that explicit is what some would consider his genius — and others might call downright amoral. THE HATEFUL EIGHT is devilishly good.” —Kate Taylor, Globe and Mail (Dec 24, 2015)
