Part of Midnight Movies

In director Gregg Araki’s ultimate stoner comedy, slacker actress Jane (Anna Faris) is having a bad day that is getting more outrageous by the minute. Jane’s misadventures begin when she treats herself to a batch of cupcakes left unattended by her psycho roommate that prove not as innocent as they appear. She then bums a ride from her roommate’s friend (John Krasinski) and attempts to cross town so she can repay an unforgiving drug dealer, attend an audition, and somehow replace the precious cupcakes. Enjoy the wild journey as Jane’s efforts to get through her day prove an arduous task of epic proportions. Featuring the vocal talents of Roscoe Lee Brown (as himself).

“Gregg Araki's latest foray into the slacker underbelly of suburban L.A., SMILEY FACE, has a wonderful performance by Anna Faris and one of the all-time great stoner monologues in movie history.” —Andrew O’Hehir, Salon

“In [Anna] Faris, pic has a comedienne with the ability to wring endless variations on a limited theme (the ‘I’m-so-baked’ one) and she pretty much single-handedly compensates for anything lacking.” —Dennis Harvey, Variety

“Despite its laid-back script, SMILEY FACE is as prankishly political as Mr. Araki’s DOOM GENERATION, evincing a deep unease with the media-saturated capitalist nation that Jane crawls inside her bong to escape.” —Matt Zoller Seitz, New York Times
